While I understand the idea of creating games that appeal specifically to younger players, especially when adapting a child’s movie, game makers may have gone a little too far with the PSP adaptation of G-Force. I don’t expect a lot from a game where the heroes are a bunch of guinea pigs and the enemies are rogue kitchen appliances, but this particular adaptation falls below my already low expectations.
Perhaps most distressing is the incredibly repetitive gameplay offered here. While scurrying around the nicely created but nondescript environments is entertaining at first, the novelty quickly wears off during action sequences. While other adaptations of this game offered many choices of weapons to vary the action, this entire ten hour game offers only one weapon – a short range whip. Beyond just being dull, this can actually make it difficult to successfully play the game in several spots.
The jetpack is a fun feature, and zooming to different platforms can actually be fun. The storyline is unremarkable, and the dialogue is laden with jokes that should appeal to younger generations, seeing as they’re the kind of jokes that make me groan. There’s a frequently reappearing minigame that is actually fun – the first ten or so times you play it. That’s sort of the bottom line to this game, which could have been at least a harmlessly entertaining way to spend a few hours if a little more variety had been added to the mix.
A highlight is probably the most creative aspect of the game – the ability to occasionally control those nefarious kitchen appliances to wreak havoc. These moment are entirely too few and far between though, and at the end of the day this is a game that really only appeals to younger, beginning gamers.
