Tom Clancy’s HAWX, available for the Playstation 3, the XBox 360, the Nintendo Wii and PCs (see GAMESPOT Review or the Official HAWX site) is a great single player flying combat game, but the multiplayer mode could use a little work (maybe a HAWX 2?)
First off, the graphics, no matter the console, look really great. From the small details on the fighter jets to the details on the ground, including very recognizable landmarks, including the White House. Well, they look good until you get too close. They will vary depending on which gaming console you play the game on, though.
HAWX stands for High Altitude Warfare-eXperimental – and is a new game for the Tom Clancy brand. It’s more of an arcade flier moreso than a tactical or strategic flight simulator. Don’t worry, though, as this makes the game fun. It’s a shame that most of the planes fly the same – a little more ‘reality’ could have been thrown in to spice it up a little.
The story in the game follows events in the Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter games, which also launched with the Tom Clancy name. It’s made, though, so that you can pick it up and play without a lot of practice. Also, the dogfights are usually not so long that you can’t pick up and play here and there when you want to without having to spend too much time with it.
Overall, if you’re into intense, arcade-style combat flying action, Tom Clancy’s HAWX might be for you. It’s easy to play, but complex enough to keep you coming back for more. It’s a beautiful game to watch too, even if you don’t accidentally blow up the surrounding landscape. Oh yeah, in this game the military is private and has none of the rules of the Air Force. Oops.
